Digicel's Rising Stars Kicks Off

Posted by Keas on 10:03 PM 1 comments

Digicel's Rising stars show has kicked off. I've managed to catch the Mandeville leg of the auditions and all i can think is..."i really need to see the rest". There is some decent talent in the top 10. I see about 3 persons with really good voices, who could possibly go on to the top 10 depending on the talent from the next auditions. I wasn't particularly impressed, but then, this is just their first performances, performances without much guidance from any professionals so i wont be too hard on them.

Nehoo, some changes this year. First off Yendi Phillips, Miss Jamaica World 2007, is the new host of the show. Ok Yendi, first off i must say, anybody with a wiki page sell off...LOL I have no comment about her performance, Its early days yet. I don't have much to say yet because i really am waiting for the overall top 10. Lets see how Jamaica votes. Those of you who have read my posts about last year's competition know that i have a serious problem with how voting is done for these competitions.

All i have to say now is Catch the shows Sundays at 8:30 pm and Fridays at 8:30 pm on TVJ. You can watch it online too, if your tv happens to be as biased as mine and wont pick up local stations on Television Jamaica's website They have repeats shows too. I think on Tuesday at 5:30 ( or something to that effect) Thursdays at 10:30pm and another time that i'm gonna have to try and remember. ahm, i'm outy...

What's Up with the Voting Public!

Posted by Keas on 10:12 PM 0 comments

So far i had been rather pleased with the Jamaican public when it comes to voting in competitions like the Heineken Green Synergy DJ Competition and the Digicel Rising Star Competition. Well, no longer, i'm shocked, flabbergasted even. What has been going on? My outrage stems from two newly received pieces of Information

1. DJ Khemist was voted out! DJ Rohan had about 2000 more votes? HUH what? Did no one listen to their semi-final playoffs? Did anybody listen to the same play off i did? Clearly not. I wasn't even doubtful that DJ Khemist had more skill than or at least displayed his skills better than Rohan. I'm rather concerned, he was poised to go on to the finals. There is at least one consolation; DJ Khemist will be going on to the regional finals as a wild card. So good luck Khemist...did mention the other dj got his votes from only two phone numbers? hmm i wonder what that means? I guess in that case i'm not really cussing the Jamaican public for this one..just highlighting the suggested/ alleged underhandedness of the Other DJ

2. Lenya Wilks is out of Rising Stars? Now this is even more absurd that the green synergy blunder. Lenya has proven at every single elimination that she is better, much better than the competition. She always had the right song, and did it very well. She never once missed! I'm still on shock over this one. Lenya was a shoe in for the competition. Meanwhile, Jodian Pantry is still in? What on earth is going on here. This can't be the same Jodian that for weeks upon weeks delivered below par performance. So she had what, about 3 good performances since reaching th top 10? I mean, seriously people, Lenya is just better, this is pure phuckery. Len

I think this is ridiculous! These competitions need to start having some judge input. Some other things need to be put in place. Like for example, one person can't be getting 90% of their votes from one phone! you know stuff like that! You can't leave it up to just the general public to decide, collectively clearly we not so smart. E.g. some sentiments people had about the results:
- she too full of herself so is a good thing she get vote off
- Anthony never ever find any thing wrong with her so people turn against her for that
Like what the...sigh...

Heineken Green Synergy- Semi Final 1

Posted by Keas on 1:29 PM 0 comments

Sorry Guys! I totally lost track of the time at about 2:45 and missed all of DJ Rohan's 25 minutes. I Heard the last 3 minutes so i have nothing to give you on that half of the play off.
But I am just in time to hear Khemist, and I'm hoping that the batteries from my MP3 player doesn't decide to go dead...this is me keeping my fingers crossed...
What can i tell you though? As i suspected, Narity got kicked out of from his playoff last week so the other semi-final will be between Dj Trinity and DJ David.

Dj Khemist Dj Rohan

Last week i gave David and Narity nuff props for playing soca. This week, I like the old dancehall that Khemist played. So far, he's doing a good job of mixing and changing from song to song smoothly, songs like "go-go wine" and "heads high" were some good selections. Scratching skills are excellent, well according to me anyway...right? I can see Khemist being a good street DJ, not just a radio DJ. He knows how to keep the vibe of the crowd, as we saw on turntablism on CVM and he works the mic, not too much but just enough to connect to listeners. The switch from Old dancehall to hip hop/rap wasn't very smooth though, it was too sharp and I'm not sure the song that he started with was a good follow from the song he was playing before. He managed to settle into the hip hop/rap segment though with songs from Notorious B.I.G and Busta Rhymes, still staying in the 1990's. This boy got some skills. I didn't hear Rohan play but if he beats out Khemist, he must have got some serious skills, because right now Khemist is impressing me.

Soca!!! Again...Ok...old soca, but that's what the public knows and likes, and that's important for a DJ to survive. Songs like "footsteps" and "stamina" are classics. I like the fact that, unlike one of the Djs last week he didn't just skip from old to new erratically, some sequence, order, some semblance that he knows what he is doing and he played them well, I could imagine being in a soca fete and enjoying the vibe, and I more than any one else is a serious critic when it comes to DJs who play Soca music.

Well his 25 minutes is up and i think he kicked ass! I know none of these Djs personally, all my comments are objective. That said...don't forget to vote guys and listen in on the Blazing 95FM, Fridays 3-4pm for the play offs.
